What is Single Touch Payroll (STP)?

For all employers

STP impacts all employers and came in to effect for large businesses (with more than 20 employees) from 1 July 2018, and for small businesses (with fewer than 20 employees) from 1 July 2019.

Streamlined process

STP works by sending tax and super information from your STP-enabled payroll or accounting software to the ATO as you run your payroll.

Payroll reporting

Your STP-enabled payroll software will send the ATO a report which includes the information they need from you, such as salaries and wages, Pay As You Go (PAYG) withholding and super liability information.

ATO requirement

STP is a legal requirement where Australian employers are required to submit payroll and superannuation data to the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) each time an employee is paid.

What has changed?

Impacts for employers

Data integrity

Employee information such as names, addresses, date of birth, and TFNs must be accurate and complete all year.

Pay cycles

Continue to pay your employees weekly, fortnightly or monthly – your pay cycle does not need to change.

ATO visibility

The ATO will gain greater visibility of all employers to ensure the employer is paying their Withholding Tax (PAYGW) and their Super Guarantee Contributions (SGC).

Pay authorisation

Each pay run is required to be reported to the ATO, which triggers the requirement for you to authorise the pay information is true and correct and able to be lodged.

Payroll system

Ensure you are using an STP-compliant cloud accounting payroll solution.

The benefits

Employers are no longer required to provide Payment Summaries to their employees - The ATO will provide them, or the employee can obtain them through myGov.

The ATO will prefill BAS and IASs with information reported through STP – this will assist accountants in preparing these statements.

Less room for error in salary payments – a surprisingly common challenge.

Beyond STP compliance

Confidence you are meeting compliance obligations with live data updates and accurate record keeping.

Data driven strategic business decisions through analysis of real-time financial performance.

Protection against data theft, cybercrime and privacy breaches through access to world class security protocols used by software vendors.

Claw back valuable time spent on administration and bookkeeping to reinvest in profit generating activities.

Manage costs with a monthly subscription, alleviating the upfront cost of traditional software and costly upgrades.

Six steps to compliance

Our advisers are trained in all major cloud accounting solutions and will be with you every step of the way.

Step 1
Partner with you to help you choose the right accounting package for your business.

Step 2
Communicate the change with your employees and payroll staff.

Step 5
Assign Payroll Categories in your chosen cloud system.

Step 6
Connect your business with the ATO.

Step 4
Review payroll to ensure all wages, taxes and super are calculated correctly (the ATO will identify discrepancies at EOFY).

Your cloud system will begin to send data to the ATO and your business will be classified as STP compliant.

Step 3
Ensure all company information is entered correctly.

Points to consider

The ATO has announced the COVID-19 JobKeeper subsidy payments will be managed through STP. To help ensure your business and staff receive this stimulus without delay, we recommend adopting STP.

Switching to cloud

Moving to a cloud solution will not only ensure you are STP compliant, but also assist you in operating your business more effectively.

ATO penalties

It is a legal requirement for all employers to comply with Single Touch Payroll requirements. ATO penalties may be incurred for those who are non-compliant.
